LANDHOO MAABUDHUGE (HAIKA).

Written by: Alive Still

As we all know, Maldives before was a Budhisam religion. But it was changed to Islam. Still we find the temples in the Islands. But these places are not taken care of so as it has to be. The places keep on getting destroyed. I am trying to say is, these places are really helpful for our tourism because the guest comes to know the life style of Maldivians. At the same time to get the hospitality from us. In the above picture you can see the temple.

Landhoo has large ruins from the historical Maldivian Buddhist era. On the northwest side of the Island, there is an ancient mound known as "Maabadhige Haithka" by the local people. This is the ruins of a Buddhist Stupa. The diameter of the mound is 292 feet and the height is 28 feet. The remains in this Island are probably the single most important Buddhist ruins in the Northern region of the Maldives. Now it looks like a sand small mountain but it has really old trees even at the top. It is said that, this place was used by a babarian king in the olden days. But now it does not looks likes a much of a temple. The person who explained this place to me was an old guy. He said, in his grand fathers time it was called haika because it has another small six places other then the main one surround the place, but they are really small like veli funi( in the picture you can see the big one). I Hope people who will read this will put an effort to see this place. Believe me it’s a nice place to go and see for our own eyes.
